Sandwich Series - Middlesex County Building
It was a very good sandwich with a very good backdrop. The sandwich was French bread. The cheese was havarti/habanero. It was filled in with sliced turkey and lettuce and mustard and mayonnaise.
I ate my lunch at the Middlesex County Building, a grand building with grand implications. For over a century, it was home to the county’s courthouse and jail. In recent decades, it has been a backdrop for weddings, and has a little-known purpose as the administrative headquarters for the County of Middlesex. It has been closed to the public since Covid, but well before that, I had a chance to attend a few county council meetings in person, and got to marvel at the historic interior.
The building, inspired by Malahide Castle in County Fingal, and the adjoining property of 50 King Street were owned by Middlesex County until late 2019. On November 26 of that year, a deal was made where the two properties were sold to York Developments. The county health unit moved out of 50 King and into Citi Plaza. A pair of 43 and 53-storey towers will be erected on that corner, hopefully soon.
The public realm of the county building as it stands, is a good one, despite being near a dormant construction site. The benches are still intact, which allowed me to complete my sandwich-eating on my lunch.

EDITOR’S NOTE: not sure if I’ll have the time or life to do weekly newsletters going forward. I’ll let you know here if that is the case. x
That's a mighty fine looking sandwich! And please keep writing about our area - someone needs to do it, and you do it very well and very authentically.
